A Unique Space for the Whole Community
Brentwood Green at Brentwood Science Magnet School is a coalition of residents, teachers, parents, LAUSD and the City of Los Angeles, established in 1997 as a 501(c) (3) charitable organization. Brentwood Green addressed the lack of open space in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles by creating a beautiful campus and playground for students and faculty that would be open to the community after school, weekends, summers and holidays.
Thanks to widespread public and private funding and volunteers, today Brentwood Science Magnet School features a grass playing field and running track, new play equipment, the Safran Family Playground, an outdoor amphitheater, numerous educational gardens and other landscape improvements, all located where before only asphalt paving existed. The David Legaspi murals, depicting California’s diverse landscape and native flora and fauna, are the centerpiece of the campus and were commissioned by Brentwood Green to honor longtime Brentwood resident Barbara Goldenberg, our muse, inspiration and co-founder.
The Brentwood Green playground is currently managed by community organizations in conjunction with LAUSD to provide community space for youth programs after school hours. Brentwood Green’s current and former supporters and affiliates include the American Youth Soccer Organization, the Westside YMCA and Bill Goldenberg Brentwood Youth House, Coast Sports, the Farmer’s Market on Gretna Green where the community can shop on Sunday’s and enjoy the playground and gardens.
Brentwood Green has created and maintains the Barbara Goldenberg Gardens, including a farm garden, native plant and butterfly gardens, literary and meditation gardens, Isaac Newton garden and a Girl Scout garden. We rely on the generous support of the Brentwood community so that the Brentwood Science Magnet School playground and gardens can remain open for play, continue to thrive and blossom, and provide a happy place for children to play and learn.
This website is dedicated to the memory of Barbara Goldenberg, founder and visionary.
